Supported Decision-Making (SDM) is a “recognized alternative to guardianship through which people with disabilities use friends, family members, and professionals to help them understand the situations and choices they face, so they make their own decisions.” Several resources on SDM are available at www.supporteddecisionmaking.org. For a very user-friendly resource from this site, visit “Supported Decision Making Teams: Setting the Wheels in Motion.” It contains useful info about SDM as well as ideas on how to support someone to make decisions.
