As a sibling to an adult with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD), I have been advocating and helping support and care for my brother, Jay, for more than 20 years.
Our story is often noted as unique as Jay was not born with IDD, but diagnosed after a terrible car accident my family and I were in.
I never imagined in an instant my life would be changed forever. But, as a family we have grown, supported each other when it seemed all hope was lost, became more faithful, and through all adversity β WE MADE IT!
Over the past 20 years, we have had many highs and lows. Navigating through a pandemic while caring for a sibling was no exception. To stay connected, Facetime and Marco Polo became a regular part of our day. Seeing Jayβs million-dollar smile on my phone screen was some of the best parts of my day!
As a sibling I have learned how important the work we do is, even through a pandemic. We are some of the greatest allies and advocates for our brothers and sisters. This National Siblings Day, I challenge you to stay connected. Hereβs how:
- Register to attend the SLN national conference
- Share information about the conference with others
- Donate to the SLN Equity and Inclusion Scholarship Fund to help provide financial support for attendance to the SLN conference and other events.
There is strength through connections, Happy National Siblings Day!
Thanks,
