Concerns about the Future of the Department of Education

News

Recent news from the federal government are raising concerns about the future of the Department of Education. Linda McMahon, the newly confirmed Secretary of Education, struggled in her confirmation hearing to demonstrate that she understands the provisions and purpose of the Every Student Succeeds Act and the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act. These are crucial civil rights laws for students with disabilities.Β

Every child, regardless of abilities and challenges, deserves the right to education. Dismantling the Department of Education would be devastating for students with disabilities. School districts in all localities receive funding from the Department of Education to execute Individualized Education Plans (IEPs). Without this, schools will not be able to provide special education services to students who rely on them.Β

At the Sibling Leadership Network, we believe that special education is necessary to help individuals with disabilities attain an education and be a part of their communities. You can reach out to your legislators to let them know your thoughts on Linda McMahon’s confirmation and how the vital role the Department of Education plays in providing special education services impacts you and your family.
