The Arc’s new tool, A Letter for My Doctors, helps people with disabilities describe how and when they want help making health care decisions.
The letter can be used to explain:
- How the person acts when he/she is upset, worried, or confused
- What a health care provider can do if the person is upset, worried, or confused
- When the person wants help making health care decisions
- Who the person wants to help them make health care decisions

AS vital as empowering people with disabilities to convey their needs and concerns to health care providers, is a targeted effort to encourage additional qualified health care providers, doctors and dentists to learn about the special needs population in ways that encourage them to take on such patients. We need more Dentists, for example, who are top flight and willing to serve this community. What kind of plan exists to train in-coming doctors, dentists, and health care workers in dealing with Special Needs individuals, and especially, an aging population in this category?
